Non-profit organizations, artists and venders are invited to the 9th Annual Black History Brain Bowl Competition for public and private school students throughout South Florida. The Brain Bowl will be held April 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Boynton Beach High School, 4975 Park Ridge Blvd., Boynton Beach, FL 33426 More than 300 students and adults are expected to attend the free event.
In a Jeopardy!-like game, elementary-, middle- and high-school students will be quizzed on their knowledge of important black Americans and significant events in black history. Teams will consist of four members and an alternate. Contestants can earn extra points by participating in essay and poster contests. Teams are encouraged to bring their cheerleaders, which will be judged separately by professional cheerleaders from Florida’s sporting teams.
“We are hoping this will help build team spirit,” said Clifford Durden, spokesman for the event. “ Teams need not be from a school but may be comprised from youth groups, churches or family members. Organizers hope the Black History Brain Bowl will promote friendly competition as well as recognize academic endeavors. “We hope this competition will give our smart students the kind of publicity and attention that is normally reserved for star athletes,” Durden said. “It sends the message to the participating students and their peers, that ‘It’s cool to be smart.’” Teams will be limited to four players and one alternate.
