Area youth to train with academic and athletic pros at 3-day camp PDF Print
Friday, 15 June 2007

DELRAY BEACH – Preparing for college entrance exams sometimes gets lost in the shuffle for students as they near the end of their high school careers.

That’s why the South Florida Scholarship & SAT Preparation Foundation and XPE Sports are offering an opportunity to practice the Scholastic Achievement Test - SAT - this weekend.

Area students can sharpen their academic skills while honing their athletic abilities at this three-day enrichment camp at Plumosa Elementary School, 1712 NE 2nd Ave., Delray Beach from Thursday, June 14 to Saturday, June 16.

During the first four-hour sessions, students will take practice SAT and FCAT exams and hear from Harvard Learning Center professionals about how to prepare for the real thing. A local minister, who served 20 years in federal prison for murder, will conduct a gang prevention seminar.

Students have been making sure they are prepared for the test, organizers said.
“We have been encouraging our kids to start early,” said Robert Dodd, program manager for the Knights of Pythagoras Mentoring Network, one of the event’s sponsors.

Several students tend to wait until their senior year to take the SAT, he added. “The sooner they get it out of the way, the more they can concentrate on other critical things needed for college.”

College athletes will conduct conditioning sessions and instruct participants on the fundamentals of the game on Thursday and Friday afternoon. And several NFL players are expected to lead a mini camp on Saturday.

The program is made possible by a partnership between SFSSP and several other organizations including Ameriprise Financial, Bank of Florida, City of Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, City of Delray Beach Police Department, Merill Lynch, Pioneer Investments, Plumosa Elementary and XPE Sports.

The registration fee is $100.  For information or to register, call 561-436-2268 or 561-926-4880.
