Why is summer the perfect time to be thinking about school? Because our Lend a Hand Mentoring program is critical to hundreds of local youth each year, and the Knights of Pythagoras Mentoring Network needs volunteers this fall!
Did you know that with one hour of your time each week, you could make a huge difference in one child’s life? Yes indeed and it’s fun and rewarding! You’ll be amazed to find out the impact you could have on that boy or girl. Just knowing you care enough to spend a few hours with them makes kids feel special, and the mentoring you provide helps boost their self-confidence. Statistics show that kids who experience our Lend a Hand Mentoring program even do better in class! Furthermore, you can help curb the violence among teenagers that is starting in our community, like so many other places. You’ve heard the countless stories of a group of kids who pick on the meek from other neighborhoods. Positive influences can mean the world to a child. If they heard that bullying and intimidating weren’t "cool" from a positive force that they could look up to and feel safe around, then maybe we would have less future gang members. And parents know what a difference it makes. But some of the biggest supporters of our Lend a Hand Mentoring program are actually teachers. They see students come back from their one-hour a week mentoring sessions with confident smiles, ready to learn and ready to succeed. Our teachers are trying their hardest to mentor our kids while they are under their care. But we need to continue the supervision when they get off the school bus. Did you know that with every bully you steer right, you also are saving another life at the same time - the kid being bullied. Our Lend a Hand Mentoring program is not a classroom program, and it’s not tutoring. Lend a Hand Mentoring program is one-to-one mentoring that takes place in the schools and after school. Of course, some students do talk with their mentors about class, or do homework, or read together, but it’s really all about friendship and guidance. You can play or jump rope or shoot hoops - whatever you and the student enjoy. You don’t need any special training or certification. If you can spend one hour a week, arranged around your needs and the school’s schedule, you may be able to start participating in our Lend a Hand Mentoring program this fall! Starting with the children, you can slow down the rise of gang violence just by taking a couple of minutes to show them there is kindness in the world. Help us tame the violence before it gets out of control. Perhaps you know someone else who would make a great mentor. Please forward this email to him or her. You can also make a donation to support the Knights of Pythagoras Mentoring Network.
