Thursday, 02 August 2007

Members of the Knights of Pythagoras Mentoring Network finished with top honors in the Annual Roots Cultural Festival Academic Olympics this weekend. Vice President Tevin Blake finished first in the spelling contest, 2nd in math, 3rd in geography and 3rd in reading in the daylong event at Pompey Park Recreational Center, 1101 NW Second St.

President Quinn Hammond earned 2nd place in geography and third in math while Knight Stephen Julian finished 2nd in geography, 3rd in spelling and 3rd in math.

“I was surprised,” said Hammond, 15, a 10th grader at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek. “I wasn’t prepared for it. I had to fill out the papers [application] that morning. It was harder than I thought it would be.”

The winners received certificates and monetary prizes.

“I’ve been saving my money from my summer job so I probably save this too,” he said.

The Olympics is one component of the annual festival, which celebrates its 30th anniversary Aug. 10-12.
