DELRAY BEACH – This weekend will be the summer’s last hurrah for hundreds of area kids and parents as they head back to school. From a teen dance to a car show to the city’s largest garage sale, there are enough activities planned in one venue for residents of all ages over the three-day event. “We will have something that appeals to every segment of our community,” said Robert Dodd, program manager for the Knights of Pythagoras Mentoring Network, one of the event’s sponsors. “This will not be a white festival or a black festival. It will be a three-day festival for the entire All-America City.”

The event, dubbed Community Revival, kicks off Friday with a ‘Teen Back to School Dance’ from 8 p.m. to midnight at Pompey Park Recreation Center, 1101 NW Second St.

Saturday will be the community Fun Day in the Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Activities include a bounce house, trackless train, obstacle course, face painting and the city’s largest indoor garage sale.

Later that evening some of the area’s best dancers will compete for a $500 cash prize in a dance -contest.

On Sunday, the public can attend a free laid-back picnic in the park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Car afficianados can enjoy the Mustang Madness car show and children in need of school supplies can get help as backpacks will be given to more than 300 kids.

Supplies are not guaranteed and will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis. Kids must be present to receive supplies.

“We’re trying to lessen the burden for parents, especially in these tough economic times,” said Barbara Haider, founder and director of One Love-One Community Foundation.  “If we can help with supplies, at least then they can put more money toward things like school clothes and shoes.”

About a half dozen organizations, including Beechee’s Entertainment, the Knights of Pythagoras Mentoring Network, Publix, TLS Enterprises, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach County, the Rotary Club of Delray Beach, Sunrise, the Center for Technology, Enterprise & Development, the City of Delray Beach Parks and Recreation Department, contributed to the event.
