DELRAY BEACH - Dozens of high school graduating seniors are expected to participate in a free leadership training program on Saturday.
The 2nd Annual KOPMN Youth Leadership Forum will be at the Delray Beach Public Library, 100 W. Atlantic Ave., from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
A cadre of experts will share tips and engage the students in discussions to educate and motivate them, organizers said.
"This is our final attempt to empower these high school seniors with the confidence to make well-informed life choices that will prepare them for bright academic futures and successful professional careers," said Clifford Durden, coordinator of the event.
The YLF is the culminating event of a year-long program held at Atlantic High School and Delray Youth Vocational Charter School. The mentoring program matches students with adult volunteers. The youth are referred by teachers, counselors, and the school police officers. Some are "at-risk," meaning they may be facing problems at home with their families, struggling at school, or have issues with their peers or in their communities.
Throughout the program, students practice Parliamentary Procedures and address some issues and concerns that may arise on campus. They are also required to read a book each week. Each week, a leader in the community or a local role model serve as a guest speaker on topics including Character traits, Life skills and conflict resolution.
Speakers include local judges, business and community leaders, bankers and members of the clergy. The students also heard from US Rep. Ted Deutsch.
The highlight of the day will be a legacy lunch where the seniors will impart tips to 30 eighth-graders on how to successfully navigate their way through high school.
